What is Ecoeat?

As economies develop, the amount of food that is still safe to eat but ultimately discarded—known as “food loss”—continues to increase. In Japan alone, approximately 6.43 million tons of food waste were generated annually (2016).

Japanese consumers maintain particularly high standards regarding food quality. Influenced by factors such as a strong culture of eating foods fresh or raw, people tend to be highly sensitive to food safety, appearance, and expiration dates.

One example is the so-called “one-third rule.” Under this distribution practice, products are often removed from store shelves once one-third of their shelf life has passed, even if they remain perfectly edible.

At the Japan Mottainai Food Center, we collect food products that are scheduled to be discarded due to such rules or because they fall outside standard specifications. Through resale and donation programs, we ensure these foods are utilized effectively rather than wasted, contributing to the reduction of food loss.

Product Flow

Happy Eco Recycling

We work every day to create a sustainable cycle where customers, manufacturers, and retailers can support one another — so that everyone can share in a happier future.

Best-Before Date & Expiration Date

Even if the best-before date has passed, it doesn’t mean the food is no longer safe to eat!
Many items are still perfectly delicious.

Let’s reduce food waste by gaining the right knowledge about food dates.
